Friday, May tenth, the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald was made into a movie. The movie was not awful; however, it was not all it was made out to be. The movie was way over-hyped.
The movie was not bad. It was just poorly thought out in some areas. For example, the story is a classic novel. When made into a movie it should remain similar. The soundtrack to the movie should not be all hip-hop. In the new version of the movie, however, it was. In a story such as this, there is no need to blast Jay-Z to amp up the movie. The action in the movie is good enough. Music is fine, but it is important that it matches the film which it is in.
Furthermore, the movie was three dimensional. Honestly, there really is not any reason to use three dimensional effects for most movies; “The Great Gatsby” being one of them. Why would anybody want to watch a movie which they have to wear glasses for. It is more expensive, and just a nuisance. Then, the person wearing them may, or may not, be bothered wearing them. They may not be comfortable, in which case the movie watching experience is not as enjoyable anyways. The whole point in going to the movies is to watch and relax. Nobody wants to have to worry about having to do something in order to enjoy the movie. If they fall off while you’re watching, then you may miss the most important part of the movie while you are looking for them.
The movie was not even filmed in New York City, where it takes place. It was filmed in Australia because it was cheaper. That is a very smart idea on behalf of the director, Baz Luhrmann. As Jay Gatsby, he used Leonardo DiCaprio, whom made his 1996 version of “Romeo and Juliet” a hit. Not a bad idea, unfortunately it did not work quite as well as it did the first time.
People had plenty to criticize about the movie. Some said ”the tempo of the city had changed,” as compared to original tempo from the book. This probably resulted from the music that did not match the time period setting. Also, others said that events from the movie seemed bigger than they were in the book, as if they were overdone.
All in all, the movie was not bad, but it was by no means great. There are many flaws with it. If you need something to do however, I suggest you go to a theater to watch it. It’s nothing to write home about though.
